“Find the equilibrium — the amount of brand spend that elevates your overall DR return.”
The take
Brand marketing has no independent purpose. It exists to lift direct response. The job isn’t choosing between brand and performance — it’s finding the point where brand spend makes your DR return better than DR alone would.
In practice
Test it. Use incrementality studies to find your own ratio instead of copying someone else’s. At Fusion that’s landed around 80/20 — 80% direct response, 20% brand. Another company might sit at 90/10 or 95/5. There’s no universal answer, only the number your data gives you.
Why it takes both
A brand-only CMO can’t measure whether the brand work is paying off. A performance-only CMO cuts brand spend the moment budgets tighten, because they can’t see what it was buying. You need both instincts in the same head to find the number.
